Members of the Laboratory of Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology (LIMB) at Dankook University participated in the 2026 Spring Conference of the Korean Society of Probiotics and Microbiome (KSPM) at the Korea Science and Technology Center in Seoul, South Korea, last May 8, 2026.



Representing the laboratory were Prof. Dae-Kyung Kang and graduate students Van Aldren Cañas, Ji Hoon Song, and Jae Seung Lee. The conference brought together researchers, industry professionals, and experts in probiotics, microbiome science, biotechnology, and bioinformatics to discuss the latest scientific developments and emerging trends in the field.



This year's conference focused on the theme, “A New Paradigm of Innovation and Strategy for the Next Leap of Probiotics and the Microbiome Based on New AI and Big Data.” Through a series of lectures and scientific presentations, participants explored how artificial intelligence and big data technologies are transforming microbiome research, probiotic development, and precision health applications. Discussions also highlighted recent advances in microbial genomics, bioinformatics, industrial biotechnology, and data-driven approaches for understanding complex microbial ecosystems.



Attendance at the conference provided LIMB members with valuable opportunities to gain insights into cutting-edge research, engage with leading scientists and industry representatives, and explore potential directions for future collaborative studies. The knowledge and perspectives gained from the event are expected to contribute to the laboratory’s ongoing efforts in microbiome research, industrial microbiology, and biotechnology innovation.



The participation of Prof. Kang and LIMB students reflects the laboratory’s continued commitment to scientific excellence, professional development, and active engagement with the broader microbiome research community.

South Korea — A successful two-day joint workshop on genome assembly and bioinformatics brought together leading researchers and scientists from the Quadram Institute (United Kingdom), Dankook University (home to the Laboratory of Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology, LIMB), and Korea National University of Transportation (KNUT). Held on March 27–28, 2026, the Quadram–DKU–KNUT Workshop 2026 fostered knowledge exchange, technical training, and discussions on future collaborative research in microbiome science and functional genomics.

The workshop commenced on March 27 with a series of scientific talks highlighting cutting-edge research from participating institutions. From the Quadram Institute, Dr. Arjan Narbad opened the session with insights into UK–South Korea partnerships on microbiome research and fermented foods. This was followed by presentations from Dr. Lizbeth Sayavedra, who discussed the pathobiont behavior of Bilophila wadsworthia, Marnie Barham on biofilm-mediated gut colonization by sulfate-reducing Desulfovibrio species, and Lizzi Coy, who explored the effects of fecal filtrates on Clostridioides difficile.

Representing LIMB at Dankook University, Dr. Remilyn Mendoza presented her work on comparative genomics to identify putative antimicrobial-coding genes in Lactiplantibacillus plantarum. Additional presentations were delivered by Jae Seung Lee, focusing on lactic acid bacteria (LAB) that alleviate gut leakage under oxidative stress, and Van Aldren Cañas, who discussed the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor-like activity of Lactobacillus sakei and its effects on the gut microbiome in mice.


Researchers from KNUT also contributed to the scientific program, including Ho-Jin Lee on the development of functional biomaterials via microbial fermentation, Muhammad Adeel Hasnain on the antimicrobial potential of Cutibacterium acnes phages and endolysins, and Muhammad Sarfaraz, who examined population-specific clade divergence of Segatella copri in colorectal cancer.

Following the talks, the workshop transitioned into an intensive hands-on training session (Part I), led by Dr. Jacob Dehinsilu from the Quadram Institute. The training covered whole-genome sequencing workflows—from Linux basics and read preprocessing to genome assembly, quality evaluation, taxonomic identification, annotation, and pangenome analysis.


On March 28, Workshop Part II continued under the guidance of Dr. Dehinsilu, focusing on metagenomics and equipping participants with practical skills in read preprocessing, taxonomic assignment, and profiling microbial metabolic pathways. A unique component of the training included generating data visualizations using large language models, reflecting the integration of artificial intelligence in bioinformatics workflows.

The event concluded with an interactive Q&A session and a collaborative discussion on future research directions, reinforcing the commitment of all participating institutions to strengthen international partnerships in microbiome and bioinformatics research.


The Quadram–DKU–KNUT Workshop 2026 stands as a testament to the power of global collaboration in advancing scientific innovation, providing researchers with both theoretical insights and practical tools to tackle complex challenges in genomics and microbiome science.

South Korea — The Laboratory of Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology (LIMB) proudly congratulates Dr. Remilyn Mendoza on the successful completion of her Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Animal Biotechnology, conferred on February 26, 2026.


Dr. Mendoza’s academic journey at LIMB reflects years of dedication, rigorous research, and meaningful contributions to the field of animal biotechnology. Her work has helped advance the laboratory’s mission of exploring innovative microbial and biotechnological approaches with applications in animal health, nutrition, and sustainable agriculture.


In recognition of her outstanding performance and research excellence, Dr. Mendoza was immediately offered a postdoctoral researcher position at LIMB following her graduation. She has since accepted the role and is currently continuing her research within the laboratory, further contributing to ongoing projects and mentoring junior researchers.


Her transition from doctoral candidate to postdoctoral researcher highlights both her scientific capability and the strong confidence the institution places in her potential. As she embarks on this next phase of her academic career, Dr. Mendoza is expected to further expand her research portfolio and strengthen collaborations within the scientific community.


The LIMB community celebrates this important milestone and looks forward to Dr. Mendoza’s continued success and contributions to the advancement of biotechnology.

Ilocos Norte, Philippines — The Laboratory of Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology (LIMB) proudly celebrates the achievements of its alumni, as Dr. Robie Vasquez and Dr. Valerie Diane Valeriano took center stage during the 12th Biennial Convention of the Philippine Society for Probiotics and Functional Foods, Inc. (PhilProFF), held on October 16, 2025, at the Teatro Ilocandia, Mariano Marcos State University.

During the afternoon technical sessions, Dr. Vasquez presented a research paper titled “Non-GMO Surface Display of β-Xylosidase on Probiotic-Derived Bacteria-Like Particles for Efficient Degradation of Xylan Hemicellulosic Material.” The study highlights a novel, non-genetically modified approach to enzyme display using bacteria-like particles derived from probiotic sources. This innovative platform demonstrates significant potential for sustainable biomass conversion, particularly in enhancing the breakdown of xylan-rich hemicellulosic materials—an important step toward efficient lignocellulosic bioprocessing.


Dr. Vasquez’s work reflects LIMB’s strong foundation in applied microbiology and biotechnology, particularly in advancing enzyme technologies and functional microbial systems for industrial and environmental applications.

Earlier in the day, fellow LIMB alumna Dr. Valeriano delivered a plenary lecture titled “From Probiotics to Live Biotherapeutics — Definitions and Regulatory Frameworks.” Representing the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden, she provided valuable insights into the evolving landscape of probiotics and the regulatory considerations surrounding next-generation biotherapeutics, emphasizing the need for standardized definitions and global frameworks.


In addition to the featured presenters, other LIMB alumni were also present at the convention, demonstrating continued engagement with the scientific community. Among them were Dr. Bernadette Bagon and Mia Amoranto, who attended the event and participated in the exchange of knowledge and collaboration among researchers and industry professionals.


The Day 2 program of the convention featured a series of plenary talks and technical presentations addressing cutting-edge developments in probiotics, prebiotics, postbiotics, and functional food innovation. Researchers from various institutions showcased molecular approaches, precision fermentation strategies, and applications of beneficial microbes in health and nutrition.


The strong presence and contributions of LIMB alumni at this international gathering underscore the institution’s continued impact in shaping leaders and innovators in microbiology, probiotics, and functional food research.

Prof. Dae-Kyung Kang and Ji Hoon Song of the Laboratory of Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology (LIMB) at Dankook University visited the Quadram Institute in Norwich, United Kingdom last October 3-7, 2025 to participate in a joint workshop aimed at strengthening research collaboration in microbiome and industrial microbiology.






This strategic meeting brought together leading experts from three institutions: the Quadram Institute, LIMB at Dankook University, and the Microbial Genetic Engineering (MGE) laboratory at Korea National University of Transportation (KNUT). Prof. Kang and Song were joined by Prof. Gi-Seong Moon of KNUT.






The delegation was warmly welcomed by Prof. Arjan Narbad and his team at the Quadram Institute. The workshop served as a platform to discuss joint research initiatives, explore collaborative projects, and exchange insights on emerging technologies in microbiome science, probiotics, and microbial biotechnology.






The partnership between Quadram Institute, LIMB, and MGE laboratory reflects a growing international interest in collaborative microbiome research that bridges fundamental science with real-world industrial applications. Plans are underway to develop joint research proposals, student and faculty exchange programs, and co-authored scientific publications in the future.

The Laboratory of Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology (LIMB) at Dankook University proudly congratulates Dr. Robie Vasquez from the Philippines on the successful completion of his integrated MS–PhD program in Animal Biotechnology.


Throughout his academic journey at Dankook University, Dr. Vasquez made remarkable contributions to microbiome and probiotic research. His dedication and innovative work led to the publication of 16 scientific papers in internationally recognized SCI journals, with a particular focus on enhancing the functional properties of probiotics and advancing microbiome studies.


In recognition of his outstanding research achievements, Dr. Vasquez was awarded the distinguished Beomeun Academic Award during the Fall 2025 commencement ceremony held on August 21. This honor reflects his significant academic excellence and contributions to the field.

The Laboratory of Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology (LIMB) proudly showcased its research at the 57th Korean Society for Food Science of Animal Resources (KoSFA) International Symposium & Annual Meeting, held May 22–24, 2025, in Daejeon, Korea. This year’s conference, themed “Future Innovations of Animal Food Science to Navigate Demographic Change,” highlighted cutting-edge developments in animal food science, and LIMB made a strong impression with two poster presentations.

The first poster, “Isolation and Identification of Ligilactobacillus salivarius Strain with Casein Protein-Degrading Capability,” earned first prize, with Jae Seung Lee recognized for this outstanding contribution to enhance protein utilization and functional food development.


The second poster, “Bioactive Hetero-Exopolysaccharide from Latilactobacillus curvatus KU15003: Production, Characterization, and Functional Properties,” highlighted LIMB’s research into bioactive exopolysaccharides with applications in food and health industries.


Prof. Dae-Kyung Kang expressed his pride in the team’s achievements, highlighting their dedication to pushing the boundaries of microbiology research. Both works reflect dedication and scientific excellence, and demonstrate LIMB’s ongoing contributions to food science innovation.


LIMB’s participation in the KoSFA symposium is a testament of the laboratory’s commitment to advancing animal food science and pioneering solutions for future challenges.

Van Aldren Cañas of the Laboratory of Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology (LIMB), Dankook University, participated in the Research in Computational Molecular Biology (RECOMB) 2025 International Conference and its inaugural satellite meeting, RECOMB: Microbiome, held April 24–25, 2025, at Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea. The event brought together over 1,300 researchers from 33 countries, offering a vibrant platform for discussing the latest advances in computational biology.




This year’s satellite meeting, focused on microbiome analysis, provided a unique opportunity for participants to explore cutting-edge research in microbial community studies. Among the distinguished speakers were Curtis Huttenhower (Harvard University, USA), Nikos Kyrpides (Joint Genome Institute, USA), and Jingyuan Fu (University Medical Center Groningen, Netherlands), who shared insights into innovative approaches for understanding microbial function and dynamics.




Van Aldren Cañas described the experience as an exciting introduction to the international research community in computational molecular biology and microbiome studies. He expressed his gratitude to LIMB at Dankook University for supporting his participation, emphasizing how this opportunity contributes to his professional growth and engagement with the global scientific community.

Together with 98 outstanding scholars from 29 countries across Southeast Asia, Africa, and Central Asia, LIMB’s newest member, Mr. Van Aldren Cañas (Integrated MS-PhD student in Animal Biotechnology), was chosen as one of the recipients of the prestigious WooJung Education and Culture Foundation Scholarship granted by the Booyoung Group in Seoul, South Korea.


For the 1st semester of 2025, six (6) Filipino students from various academic disciplines were selected based on their academic excellence, character, financial need, and commitment to societal impact and global community. The awarding ceremony was graced by Her Excellency Ma. Theresa Dizon-De Vega, the Philippine Ambassador to Korea, who extended her heartfelt congratulations to the Filipino scholars. She also expressed her gratitude for the continued support of the WooJung Education and Culture Foundation toward Filipino students and the broader Filipino community in South Korea and in the Philippines.

To boost collaborative scientific exploration, LIMB, led by Prof. Dae-Kyung Kang, hosted a pivotal discussion at Dankook University on December 6, 2024, to establish a joint partnership between the Quadram Institute in Norwich, United Kingdom, through Prof. Arjan Narbad, and the Microbial Genetic Engineering (MGE) laboratory at Korea National University of Transportation (KNUT), led by Prof. Gi-Seong Moon.

Research members from LIMB and MGE participated in the joint partnership meeting, where they exchanged insights into their respective fields of specialization with Prof. Narbad and explored opportunities for collaborative workshops, laboratory visits, and joint publications in the future.


The three institutions are optimistic about the outcomes of the discussions, with workshops set to commence in 2025. These workshops aim to foster knowledge exchange, advance microbiome research, and strengthen the partnership through joint projects, shared expertise, and innovative discoveries in research and development.

Seoul, South Korea. LIMB once again proved its prowess as Mr. Robie Vasquez landed first place at the recently concluded 2024 SiyentiPIKO Research Colloquium held at the Seoul National University-Asia Center (SNUAC) on September 21, 2024. 

With the theme "Paghahabi ng Kaalaman at Karunungan: Weaving the Fabric of Philippines-Korea Relations through Research, Development, and Innovation," the Colloquium aimed to celebrate the international cooperation between the two countries by highlighting research proposals and published works of Filipino students and academics in South Korea.

Vasquez bested the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) parallel session attended by over 180 participants with his research work entitled "Oral Immunization with non-GMO surface displayed SARS-CoV-2 spike epitopes on bacteria-like particles provokes robust humoral and cellular immune responses, and modulated the gut microbiome in mice." Other thematic areas included parallel sessions in the Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS) and Business, Entrepreneurship, and Mathematics (BEAM) fields.

The event was co-hosted by Pinoy Iskolar sa Korea (PIKO) and the Philippine Embassy in Seoul, with the support of the Association of Filipino Educators in Korea (AFEK), SNUAC, University of Southeastern Philippines - College of Applied Economics (USEP), and Batangas State University - ARASOF.

Gyeongju, South Korea. Professor Dae-Kyung Kang and LIMB members Mr. Ji Hoon Song and Jae Seung Lee attended the 2024 Korean Society for Animal Science and Technology (KSAST) Conference held in HICO, Gyeongju, South Korea last June 26 to 28, 2024. The conference has a theme "Sustainable Livestock Production: Carbon Neutrality, ESG and Livestock Policy". 

At the conference, Prof. Kang was awarded with the NH Academic Award. LIMB leader JH Song accepted the award for Prof. Kang. The award was presented by Prof. In Ho Kim, chairman of the KSAST.

Busan, South Korea. Professor Dae-Kyung Kang, along with the LIMB members attended the 51st Annual Meeting and International Symposium of The Korean Society for Microbiology and Biotechnology (KMB) held last June 19-21 at BEXCO, Busan, South Korea. The symposium was themed "Half-century excellence navigating towards a century of impact". Topics such as probiotics, postbiotics, alternative protein food R&D, functional fermented foods, and cutting-edge biotechnology applications were presented during the symposium. There were also plenary sessions about microbial interactions, bioinformatics, and the development of new antibiotics and therapeutic strategies.

During the conference, Prof. Kang presented two lectures entitled "Genomic Analysis, Safety, and Health Functional Properties of Microbiome-Targeted Probiotics" and "Application of Lactic Acid Bacteria to Mucosal Vaccine Carrier". At the end of the symposium, Prof. Kang was awarded with Acebiome Probiotics Academic Award for his contribution in the field of probiotics.

Cheonan, South Korea. LIMB welcomes Dr. Manoj Kumar Yadav as the laboratory's post-doctoral fellow. Dr. Yadav is from Uttar Pradesh, India. He obtained his PhD in Genetics at the M.D. University, Rohtak. Dr. Yadav specializes in microbial technology, focusing on the study of lactic acid bacteria-derived bacteriocins. Dr. Yadav will share his expertise with LIMB members and continue to hone his skills at LIMB. Welcome to LIMB!

LIMB members such as Mr. Ji Hoon Song and Mr. Jaeseung Lee, together with their adviser, Professor Dae-Kyung Kang attended and participated in the recently completed 2023 Korean Society of Animal Science and Technology Conference held at the Kimdaejung Convention Center in Jeollanam-do. In the conference, Mr. Lee, a combined MS-Ph.D. student presented a poster of one of his works entitled “Isolation and identification of Ligilactobacillus salivarius strains with soy protein-degrading capability. This poster was recognized and given an excellence award by the conference organizing committee. Congratulations Jaeseung! Keep it up!

 

LIMB members and their Professor, Dr. Dae-Kyung Kang attended and participated in two simultaneous scientific conferences in Bratislava, Slovakia, and in Gyeongju, South Korea where LIMB members as well as Prof. Kang received various awards.

Mr. Ji Hoon Song presented a poster on the characterization of an anti-listerial bacteriocin produced by Ligilactobacillus agilis C7 and heterologous expression in Escherichia coli and received 2nd place for the best poster award! Congratulations Ji Hoon! We also acknowledge the work of Mr. Jeong Min Yoo, MSc., our LIMB alumnus who previously worked on the characterization of Agilicin C7.

Mr. Robie Vasquez received the award certificate from the KMB2023 officials along with the other awardees. 


Not only LIMB members received awards but so was their professor, Dr. Dae-Kyung Kang who was acknowledged and awarded in the KMB 2023 with the Leading Scientist Award. Congratulations Prof. Kang! LIMB is so proud of you!

Dr. Dae-Kyung Kang and Mr. Robie Vasquez were recipients of the Leading Scientist Award and Academic Student Award, respectively at the recently held KMB 2023 at Gyeongju, South Korea.

Congratulations Dr. Chung Hoo Yoon for successfully completing your Ph.D. Degree!!

Dr. Chung Hoo Yoon is joining the roster of LIMB graduates as he has also successfully completed his Ph.D. degree and is included in Dankook University’s graduate class of 2023. During his Ph.D., Dr. Yoon was also working as the Fermented Milk Team Leader at the Research and Development Center of Maeil Dairy Co. Under the supervision of Dr. Dae Kyung Kang, Dr. Yoon worked on his Ph.D. dissertation entitled “Screening and Characterization of Lactic Acid Bacteria Derived from Traditional Fermented Foods for Development of Cognitive Function-improving Probiotics”. Dr. Yoon’s perseverance and hard work are inspirations to current LIMB members.

 

Again, congratulations Dr. Chung Hoo Yoon! And cheers to your future undertakings.

Two LIMB members finally completed their graduate studies, In-Chan Hwang Ph.D., and Jeong Min Yoo, M.Sc. For his Ph.D. dissertation, Dr. In-Chan Hwang worked on the development of a Lactiplantibacillus plantarum-based vector expressing SARS-CoV2 antigen that elicited an immune response in immune cells and mice. This study opens a possibility on the use of lactic acid bacteria in the development of mucosal vaccines. Meanwhile, Mr. Jeong Min Yoo worked on the characterization of an anti-listerial bacteriocin, agilicin C7, from Ligilactobacillus agilis C7. Both added valuable contributions to the pool of knowledge on lactic acid bacteria.  Dr. Hwang is currently preparing for his post-doctoral application while Mr. Yoo has started working as a Research Scientist in a private company.
