Budapest, Hungary. One of LIMB's current Ph.D. students, Ju Kyoung Oh, won third place for his poster presentation entitled, "Changes in the faecal microbial community by feeding Enterococcus sp. and lactulose in weaning pigs", at the International Scientific Conference on Probiotics and Prebiotics (IPC) 2017, last June 22nd 2017 at the Marriott Hotel.

IPC2017 was held during the 20th to the 22nd of June 2017, and has been a successful conference series on probiotics since 2000. Mainly, the conference focuses on the research, production, and use of probiotics and prebiotics in health and disease prevention. The conference provides an interactive forum for all stakeholders involved to exchange state-of-the-art knowledge, present new scientific evidences for health claims and efficiency of existing substances and applications, and likewise, emerging ideas that come with solid scientific basis.

Mr. Oh's poster presentation, alongside his co-authors, LIMB alumni Edward Pajarillo and Jong Pyo Chae, presents the gut microbial changes that occurred in weaned piglets using synbiotics, which compared the microbial changes with administration with lactulose only (LAC), Enterococcus sp. only (PRO), and a prebiotic-probiotic mixture of both (SYN). In comparison to the control groups, Enterobacteriaceae was decreased in all trials, especially the LAC group, and that the presence of Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes were increased. Individual effects were observed for both treatments, and that there seemed to be a cumulative effect with prebiotic and probiotic administration on the microbial composition on weaned pigs (i.e. increased alpha-diversity, decreased pathogenic bacteria, and increased lactobacilli population).

The award was presented by the International Committee on Food Microbiology and Hygiene (ICFMH) of the International Union of Microbiological Societies (IUMS). Along with the poster award, Mr. Oh was also given a cash award of 100 Euros.
