LIMB MEMBERS RECEIVE AWARDS AT 2018 KoSFA MEETING



LIMB members and alumni at the 2018 KoSFA Annual Meeting in Ara Convention Hall, Jeju National University 

Jeju, Korea. On the 24th of May 2018, the Korean Society for Food Science of Animal Resources (KoSFA) commenced their 50th International Symposium and Annual Meeting at the Ara Convention Hall of Jeju National University. This year, the conference focused on “Cultures and Ethics of Animal Originated Foods” from Korea and other countries such as Australia, USA, Canada, Japan, Vietnam, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, and India.

During the Welcome Reception, Prof. Dae-Kyung Kang was given an Academic Award to recognize his achievements and contributions to the scientific community.

Among the LIMB members who attended, Bernadette Bagon and Yena Oh participated in the conference presentation competitions. After concluding the last session of the conference, the Awarding Ceremony was held on Friday, May 25.

Our M.Sc. candidate Yena Oh won Best Poster Award for her poster entitled “Isolation of Putative Adhesion Proteins from Lactic Acid Bacteria.” In the poster, she summarized her latest work on finding putative proteins expressed by three different strains of lactic acid bacteria for their adhesion onto the surface of Caco-2 cell lines.

Our Ph.D. student Bernadette Bagon won the Best Oral Presentation Award for her presentation entitled, “In-depth Investigation of Lactobacillus mucosae LM1 genome for its probiotic application.” Representing her co-authors, Valerie Diane Valeriano, Ju Kyoung Oh, Sang Hoon Kim, and Prof. Dae-Kyung Kang, she delivered a ten-minute presentation on the genome analysis of Lactobacillus mucosae LM1 in comparison to other lactobacilli genomes to understand its potential for probiotic use.
